Midwifery is rooted in physiologic birth, drawing upon your body’s innate ability to carry and bring your child into the world. My goal is to provide you with support, encouragement, and a sense of safety throughout the unfolding journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

While midwives are qualified to provide care in any setting, we are uniquely focused on in-home care.

This allows us to operate autonomously and act as your partner, creating a birthing experience tailored to your needs and wishes. Although I aim to keep the use of modern medicine to a minimum, I am trained to use obstetric technology when needed, and do so with you and your baby’s best interests in mind. It is my belief that you deserve choices in the birthing process.

My Process:
What to Expect

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care is tailored to meet the individual needs of each of my clients. The general schedule of care includes monthly visits until 36 weeks, then weekly visits until birth. Additional visits are always added as needed with no additional charge. At around 36 weeks, I will come to your house for a home visit with the full birth team including those in your support system who will attend your birth. This allows everyone who will be working together to support your labor and birth to get to know each other.

During the prenatal period, I will monitor the health of you and your baby through routine assessments of your vital signs, fetal heart tone checks, palpation and fundal height measurement, ultrasounds, and any lab work that might be indicated. During each visit we have ample time to explore important topics and decisions for you and the baby, discuss the birthing process, and generally check in on how you are doing in body, spirit, and mind. Your experience and input is invaluable to my ongoing assessment of your well-being.

Labor + Birth

Midwives are trained to expect that birth will unfold normally, but we come prepared with equipment, medications, and supplies to care for you and your baby in whatever way is needed. There are always two fully licensed midwives at your birth, myself and an assistant midwife who you will meet during your homevisit. This way we have a full care team dedicated to you and your baby.

During birth, you are encouraged to change positions and locations as you desire – many clients choose to labor and birth in a birth tub. You are welcome to include as many or as few support people as you would like. I am there to help create the experience you desire while maintaining safety, empowering you to make the decisions that feel best for you in the moment.

Postpartum Care

After the baby is born and everyone is stable, I will tuck you in, make sure you’re fed, and give instructions for postpartum recovery and care. Typically midwives depart a few hours after birth and return for a postpartum visit the next day.

Being able to stay home for postpartum appointments is incredibly beneficial. The first few weeks after you give birth are an important time for healing, bonding, establishing a feeding relationship, and adjusting to your new normal.

The first month of postpartum visits occur in the comfort of your home (typically one day, three days, one week, two weeks, and four weeks after birth). We then return to office-based visits for our final postpartum appointment around 6 weeks and 3 months. I am available by phone between scheduled appointments should you have any questions or concerns, and can make additional home visits if needed.

Supplemental Prenatal
and Postpartum Care

Home birth isn’t for everyone, but I believe everyone can benefit from the intimacy of midwifery care.

The hallmarks of midwifery care include individualized care, counseling and education, and shared decision-making; it is a form of care that extends beyond the physical and into your mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being. Supplemental Care is a wonderful option if you’d like to work with a midwife but need or prefer to birth in a hospital setting.

Prenatal and postpartum visits can follow the typical schedule of care, or they can be done on an as-needed basis. During a typical visit we will discuss nutrition, birth goals, pregnancy discomforts, and treatment options. The goal of these visits is to develop a predictable and nourishing support system during the exciting and tender process of gestation, birth, and recovery.

“Good midwifery is a combination of art, science, experience, and instinct.”

Well-Body and Preconception Care

Well-body care is for every body. Whatever the stage of life, midwifery can support you with individualized, evidence-based care rooted in an approach that takes mind, body, and spirit into equal consideration.

Midwives can provide care for people outside of pregnancy, creating a health plan that focuses on your goals and includes services such as physical exams, pap screenings, breast exams, family planning, nutrition guidance, and lab work. In this way our work is focused on preventative care. One of the best parts of well-body care with a midwife is establishing an ongoing relationship with a single provider. Preconception care turns to prenatal care; postpartum care turns to primary care.
